With the closure of airports indefinitely, the arrival of international volunteers, unfortunately, has been postponed. However, the work that the Reserva Playa Tortuga has carried out for a long time in the community is bearing fruit; much success has been achieved to engrain a message of conservation and protection of natural resources into the people of our region.

Thanks to this connection between the Reserve and the community, in these difficult times, help was immediate: our good neighbors have jumped on the scene and selflessly offered their time and energy so that the Reserve continued to carry out its monitoring.

Thus, several neighbors have joined the monitoring of monkeys, reforestation and morning walks while waiting for the arrival of the first turtles to Playa Tortuga.

This support from our friends is the main objective of our organization, what we call “participatory science”. Our vision of creating science at the service of the community made the community serve science. We are proud of our community that once again has risen to the occasion.

Ciencia participativa

 Con el cierre de los aeropuertos de manera indefinida la llegada de voluntarios internacionales, lamentablemente, se ha visto pospuesta. Sin embargo el trabajo que durante largo tiempo ha llevado a cabo la Reserva Playa Tortuga en la comunidad está dando frutos; con mucho éxito se ha logrado inculcar un mensaje de conservación y protección de los recursos naturales en las personas de nuestra región. 

Gracias a esta conexión entre la Reserva y la comunidad, en estos díficiles tiempos, la ayuda no se hizo esperar: nuestros buenos vecinos han saltado a la escena y de manera desinteresada ofrecieron su tiempo y energía para que la Reserva siguiera ejecutando sus monitoreos.

Así, varios vecinos se han unido a los monitoreos de monos, reforestación y en las caminatas matutinas a la espera del arribo de las primeras tortugas a Playa Tortuga. 

Este apoyo de nuestros amigos es el objetivo principal de nuestra organización, lo que llamamos “ciencia participativa”. Nuestra visión de crear ciencia al servicio de la comunidad hizo que la comunidad esté al servicio de la ciencia.

Lots of things have changed over the past 4 months. I went from traveling and competing monthly to not moving at all and not being able to go to the beach. N​ow, we are able to surf at designated times. For me though it means more physical​ ​training out of the water to still be in shape for when they do open up the beaches fully. During my time at home I work out a lot more. I find new workouts and learn new tricks on the skateboard.

Right now we only get to surf during specific times, which for us surfers is a start to getting back in the water again. At one point beaches had closed completely, and that time had made me realize how much I love surfing and why it is so important to me. When I got back in the water, I valued it much more. I don’t think, at least right now, that the beaches are going to open any time soon. I hope I’m wrong but that looks the most accurate at these times. But – we still get to surf, and for me that is the most that I can ask for right now. And the best way to get back to surfing, is to get used to the waves again and go back everyday.

I have been so desperate to surf since everything started because the waves were big and fun but all the beaches got shut down when the waves got good. There, I learned to respect what was happening and not sneak out when there was a chance. So to be honest, even now that the beaches are open at designated times I have still been working out a lot because three hours of surfing isn’t enough to keep me in competition ready shape​.​ I am excited to see how the culture of the contest will change in Costa Rica and internationally from what it was before, and now, after everything that has happened this past year.

As well we have ample natural attractions to be discovered and the wildlife is abundant! Here are a few animals and mammals you may easily spot while visiting our coast.

Scarlet Macaws

You know you have reached the beach when you hear the squawk of this brilliantly beautiful bird. Normally flying in pairs, this noisy duo tends to hang out in the almond trees.

Whales

Easily spotted from the coast, the majestic Humpback Whales grace us with their annual presence, migrating either from Alaska or Antarctica they some to mate off the coast of Costa Ballena. The southern hemisphere whales can be seen from August to December, and those from the northern hemisphere mate from December to April.

Olive Ridley Sea Turtle

Nesting has now started as of mid-July, and will happen until the first week of December. You can go with the Reserva Playa Tortuga to release newly hatched baby turtles into the Ocean at Playa Tortuga. It’s a unique experience that you must try once in your life.

Tapirs & Big Cats

Roam where the wild things are. More and more, these mammals are spotted with the aid of a guide in Corcovado National Park. Osa Peninsula is considered one of the most biologically diverse regions in the world. Hiking trails and day trips are a great way to explore untouched nature.

White Faced Monkeys

Do you hear or see leaves rustling above? Chances are there is a troop of monkeys eating away above you. Look up, can you spot them? Also called capuchin, these small primates are widely recognized as the most intelligent New World monkey.
